Our story-Established in August 2016, Center for Development and Peace (CDP-Kenya) is a young women-led, community based organization committed to championing gender equality and the rights of women and girls. Our purpose is to expand opportunities for women and girls to realize their full potential, agency, and freedom- free from violence, discrimination, and systemic barriers.
Our vision is a just and gender-equitable society where women and girls live with dignity, lead in decision-making spaces, and actively shape the social, economic, political, and environmental transformation of their communities. We are intentional about promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), advancing women’s economic empowerment, amplifying women’s leadership in peacebuilding and governance, and ensuring women’s voices are at the heart of the climate justice agenda.
CDP-Kenya came together in response to the persistent inequalities and harmful norms, that continue to hold women and girls back, especially in coastal Kenya’s conservative and patriarchal settings. We recognized that early and unplanned pregnancies, sexual and gender-based violence, and economic exclusion drastically limit girls’ futures. When a girl becomes pregnant, she often faces school dropout, limited job prospects, and heightened vulnerability to poverty and social isolation.
We apply a systems change approach to all our programmatic and policy work. Through art, advocacy, public awareness, research, policy influencing, and preventative education, we aim to transform not only harmful cultural norms but also the underlying systems and structures that perpetuate gender inequality. Whether it’s through participatory theatre, community dialogues, or empowering young female leaders, our work is grounded in intersectionality and the belief that change must be both grassroots-led and systemic
Harnessing local knowledge and resources for sustainable impact. CDP’ s mission is to champion, expand and attain women’s and girls’ rights and gender equality. We came together in response to championing for good governance, social justice, increased representation of women in government and community-led initiatives, CDP envisions faster achievement of the SDG’s in gender equality, decent work and economic growth, climate action, peacebuilding and security, health and well-being. Our core approach is to influence participation of this critical population to address challenges in their own communities, and respond to them using as much local resources as possible.
Some of our activities include offering mentorship programs for in and out of school youth (CDP believes in building a generation of more aware and engaged individuals for future prosperity). We also conduct policy awareness, sensitization and support programs in partnership with the County and National government to ensure that development directions and outcomes are institutionalized and
accountability and implementation structures laid down .We also have
peacebuilding programs, trainings on life skills and non-violent conflict resolution skills. We conduct community outreaches through theatre, football, and other forms of arts for expression. We facilitate collaboration between youth and police through joint events and facilitate peer-to-peer learning circles.
